Considering Matthew Shepard is the Grammy®-nominated three-part choral work composed by Craig Hella Johnson in response to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, who in October 1998 was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die in a lonely field under a blanket of stars, in one of America’s most notorious anti-gay hate crimes.

Considering Matthew Shepard, which debuted at number four on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Chart, transports listeners through a tapestry of musical textures and idioms. Like Bach’s large-scale choral works, this spellbinding piece draws on many styles masterfully juxtaposed: spoken text, cowboy song, American hymnody and popular song, spirituals, jazz and dazzling polyphony, all woven into a seamless tapestry.

This poignant concert experience inspires hope, compassion, and empowerment. The impact is immediate, profound and, at times, overwhelming.

Local community groups including Perceptions, GLAD, Family and Children’s Services, and Equality Michigan will have resource tables and representatives in the Red Carpet Lobby before and after the concert.

A talkback with composer and conductor Craig Hella Johnson will immediately follow the performance
