In May, Bay City Players Alumni, Betsy Miller, was chosen as best actress at the Sutton Foster statewide High School Musical awards presented by the Wharton Center. She and the best actor were selected as the two high school students to represent Michigan in New York City, at the “Jimmy’s.” Betsy has been in NYC since June 18 with 80 other high school musical theater students, enjoying master classes, individualized coaching, and preparing for the Awards Ceremony.
The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (the Jimmy® Awards) are a national celebration of outstanding student achievement, recognizing individual artistry in vocal, dance, and acting performance and elevating the importance of theatre arts education in schools. The Jimmy Awards are presented by The Broadway League Foundation.
Since in NYC, Betsy has learned that she has been chosen as one of the 40 students who will be performing a solo from their high school show (Betsy was Mary Poppins in John Glenn High School’s Fall production). From these 40 students, 6 will be chosen as finalists, and 2 students will win the competition (one male and one female).
Betsy started her life on stage in Youtheatre at Bay City Players. She was last seen in Gypsy and the Sound of Music on the Bay City Players stage. Betsy has received wonderful advice and inspiration from Kevin Cole, Leeds Bird, Katie Travis, and many other Bay City Players regulars.
Players supporters will be able to see the “Jimmy’s,” LIVE, on Facebook, Monday, June 25, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.
Betsy will be in the opening and closing numbers, and will also be in the Medley #3. Betsy appreciates all of the support from the many friends that she has at Bay City Players. Betsy is going to be a Senior at John Glenn high school this Fall. She is the daughter of Kent Miller and Jessie Scott Wood.
